Geographical origin

Es Pou Colomer is located in the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar in the north-east of Mallorca and it covers 27 hectares. The extensive Mediterranean garrigue surrounding it and the panoramic views over the plain of the Pla de Mallorca, the east coast of the island, the gentle hills of the Serres de Llevant and the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana in the distance make up its distinctive landscape of great beauty and importance.

Botanical origin

Es Pou Colomer is a unique natural space thanks to the presence of a wide variety of Mediterranean habitats. The following plant communities found there that are of interest to bees are: Spanish broom (Genista spp.), white leaved rock rose (Cistus albidus) and Montpellier cistus (Cistus monspeliensis), which form part of various communities of open and low garrigue; germanders (Teucrium spp.), purple milk thistle (Galactites tomentosa) and asphodel (Asphodelus spp.), which are some of the most extensive plant communities; in clearings in the garrigue, we also find common hawthorn (Crataegus sp.) and Mediterranean buckthorn (Rhamnus alaternus); and in the areas enclosed by dry-stone walls there are orchards of almond (Prunus dulcis) and carob trees (Ceratonia siliqua) typical of the rural landscape of Mallorca.
